Secure EoL detection is a MUST for high-end devices

Annex 17 of standard EN 61347-2-3 (VDE 0712-33) is called the End-of-Lamp-Life requirement. Since 1st September 2007, electronic control gears (ECG) for the operation of fluorescent lamps with a diameter of the tube of less than 26mm, have to be equipped with an EoL-function (shut-down in case of lamp failure). Affected are all devices for 16mm-fluorescent lamps T5 and compact energy saving lamps with pin-base and a T4- or T5 tube.
This amendment was due for security reasons:
At the end of a lamp’s life, high temperatures may appear in the filaments’ area and in the worst case, the sockets may even melt. An ECG is expected to prevent this occurring by shutting down the system.
The safety End-of-Life shut-down from OSRAM, according to Test 2 (EoL T.2), ensures a particularly reliable disconnection at the end of a lamp’s life or in case of a lamp failure. With this Test 2, the asymmetrical wattage detection, we have chosen the strictest one for you and your customers’ safety. The new generation of OSRAM ECG are exemplary with this feature.
